BADC staffs working with life risk as office building vulnerable

Abdur Razzaque : Officers and employees of Bangladesh agriculture development corporation (BADC) in Nilphamari are in serious life risk, as they have to do regular official works in a too old and vulnerable office building, which may collapse at any time.
Sources in BADC inform that the important govt. department started to work in this office building in 1967 during Pakistan era under East Pakistan agriculture development corporation (EPADC) which turned as BADC after independence in 1971.
Since then, the two-stored office building doesn’t undergo any major repairing or renovation in last 49 years compelling the staff to continue official work there amid risk.
Visiting the building on Wednesday, it was found that the entire building is damp as water trickles down the roof at time of raining and there are cracks on walls, roof and pillars while weeds grow at different places.
There also seen signs of damages elsewhere as chunks of concrete and plaster fallen at no time making the corrugated iron sheet inside visible.
Sub assistant engineer (SAO) Md Rabiul Islam said, “ Big chunk of concrete and plaster fell from the roof just beside my chair two days ago while working in my office on first floor.” “If it fell on me I would have died, thanks god as I am unhurt,” he added.
He also said that for safety of the officials and farmers visiting the office, they had abandoned their office in first floor and now doing all official works in the ground floor though it is also risky but no way, the SAO further said.
As information gathered by this correspondent, it was known that this office deals with irrigation programme for farmers as it has 70 power run deep water pumps covering irrigation to around 10 thousand acores of farm land with 6 thousand beneficiaries.
It also works for surface water management to reduce the extraction of ground water and making a number of water reservoirs by excavating water bodies.
Azad Ali Shah, head mechanic of the office said that large number of farmers now crowing the office for getting service of their pumps and also for various official needs.
Farmer Khairat Hossain of Shimul toli village in sador upazila said that they felt panicked while enter the office as often concrete chuks, lumps of plaster from roof falls very often.
Another beneficiary Monjurul master of khoksabari village said that a week before he received injury as concrete chunk fell on him while came to the office for certain purpose and even I had to go to the hospital for treatment.
Office assistant Abdul Hannan said that he had to stay in the office at least 8 hours a day and during his stay he couldn’t concentrate to work for fear of accident.
Assistant engineer of BADC in Nilphamari Hussain Md Khaleduzzaman on contact said,
“ I’ve brought the matter to notice of higher authority in written requesting to arrange a new office and they assured that a new project will be initiated soon to meet our requirement.”
